Ground pumps ensure that the water in our area is maintained. If there is too much water, the excess water is pumped from the polders (the lower parts of our area) to the basin (large lakes, ponds and canals, the water of which is maintained by large basin pumping stations). The water is drained from there. In this section we will discuss a few well-known pumping stations such as the historic Wouda steam pumping station which is still used almost every year for water drainage in very wet times.
